What Our Dentists Look for In a Dental Exam
As part of a routine dental checkup and dental exam, the dental hygienist will clean your child’s teeth and report what they find to the pediatric dentist.
During the dental exam for kids, the pediatric dentist will also be checking your child’s teeth and mouth for the following:
- The health of the teeth and gums
- Teeth positioning including bite and spacing
- Functioning and health of the jaw joint and facial bones
- Any changes to the teeth or gums (positioning, discoloration, inflammation, etc.)
- Signs of tooth decay or cavities
- Signs of damaged teeth due to teeth grinding or clenching
- Signs of soft tissue damage, bleeding, inflammation, or gum disease
- Signs of mouth lesions, sores, plus the condition of the salivary glands
- Check the condition of any previous dental work that may have been performed
- Discuss any treatment planning should your child have cavities or other tooth issues
- Check your child’s neck area, glands, and lymph nodes for possible health problems
Following the dental exam, our kid’s dentist will review their findings with you and make any recommendations necessary for follow-up work.
A dental exam for kids is a preventative measure. Dental exams help to detect developing issues early before your child feels any pain or discomfort. We even have “Happy Visits” for younger patients that need a little extra time getting used to being in a dental office.
Dental Exams for Overall Health
When our pediatric dentists look inside your child’s mouth, we are looking for anything that may affect your child’s oral health. The dentist can tell a lot about the condition and health of your child’s teeth and gums just with a physical exam.
However, there’s more to a dental exam for kids than just looking at their oral health.
Medical History
We also look at your child’s complete medical history. The more we know about your child’s overall health, including any allergies or medications they may be taking, the better we can address any oral health issues your child may develop.
Dental X-rays
We will also sometimes use dental x-rays to help assist with the dental exam for kids. New digital x-ray technology is much safer and helps to reveal any problems that can’t be diagnosed with just a physical exam. These may include gum disease, bone loss, and tooth decay below the gums.
Fluoride Treatment
Your child’s dentist may also suggest fluoride treatment to help protect your child’s teeth and reduce the risk of tooth decay.
Oral Hygiene
Our dental team will also discuss how to help your child develop proper oral hygiene habits, including brushing, flossing, and in some cases, a healthy diet.
Oral Education for Older Children
As children get older our pediatric dentist will also discuss other age-appropriate topics such as the importance of wearing sports mouth guards and avoiding smoking.
How Often Should Your Child Have a Dental Exam?
It’s imperative to educate your child early about oral health and the importance of routine dental exams for kids. You can take your child for their first dental visit after the first baby tooth has broken through.
Then, as they continue to grow, you should book a dental exam at least once or twice a year to ensure continued oral health.
